Overview

World Horse Day is observed on 11 July. The United Nations General Assembly created the Day to recognize the economic, social and cultural importance of horses and to encourage attention to equine welfare, horse husbandry and equestrian heritage.

The observance covers many roles horses continue to play, including transport, agriculture, sport, tourism, recreation, therapy and rural livelihoods. It should not be reduced to racing or entertainment alone.

Why it matters

Horses have shaped mobility, agriculture, warfare, trade, sport and cultural traditions across many societies. In some rural and nomadic communities they remain economically important working animals as well as cultural symbols.

World Horse Day also creates room to discuss welfare, breed conservation, pasture pressures, climate impacts, working-equid conditions and the long-term sustainability of equine industries and traditions.

History

President of Mongolia Khurelsukh Ukhnaa initiated the proposal to establish World Horse Day. Draft resolution A/79/L.89 was submitted by Austria, Bahrain, Kyrgyzstan, Mongolia, Portugal, Qatar and Türkiye and later gained many additional co-sponsors.

On 3 June 2025, the United Nations General Assembly adopted the resolution as A/RES/79/291 and proclaimed 11 July as World Horse Day.

World Horse Day was celebrated for the first time on 11 July 2025. Mongolia later explained at the United Nations that the date coincides with the country’s National Naadam Festival, an equestrian-rich cultural festival inscribed on UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
