Microsoft Store app not installing in Windows 11: update, account and cache checks

Separate a Store/app problem from regional availability or a broader Windows problem before reinstalling anything.

Applies to: Windows 11 and Microsoft StoreChange risk: LowReviewed: 2026-09-17
Do this first
  1. Restart Windows and reopen Microsoft Store.
  2. Install pending Windows updates.
  3. Open Microsoft Store > Library and get Store/app updates.
  4. Confirm you are using the intended Microsoft account and region.

What this problem usually means

Store install failures can involve Windows updates, the Store app itself, account/region availability, app compatibility or cache state. A missing app is not automatically an install failure because availability can vary by region or account conditions.

Ordered repair path

Work from the narrowest fix to the broader one.

1

Update Windows and Microsoft Store first

Low risk

Why this belongs here: Microsoft lists current Windows and Store updates near the start of its Store app troubleshooting path.

  1. Open Settings > Windows Update and check for updates.
  2. Open Microsoft Store > Library.
  3. Get available updates and retry the app installation.
2

Reset the Store cache with WSReset

Low risk

Why this belongs here: WSReset is Microsoft's supported cache reset for Store launch/search/install troubleshooting.

  1. Press Windows logo key + R.
  2. Enter wsreset.exe and select OK.
  3. Wait for the blank command window to close and Store to reopen.
  4. Retry the installation.
wsreset.exe
3

Repair or reset the affected Store app when it is already installed

Low to medium risk

Why this belongs here: An installed app with damaged local state may be repairable without deleting and reinstalling it.

  1. Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
  2. Open Advanced options for the app when available.
  3. Try Repair first, then Reset only if needed.
Stop condition

When this guide stops being the right path

If the app is not offered in your country/region or is restricted by account/family policy, repeated cache resets will not make it available.

If the problem is still not fixed

If Microsoft Store itself will not launch, use the Store-not-opening guide; if many Windows apps fail, move to the broader app/system path.
