For Mira, who always left a light on.
8 Book Dedication Examples
Use these examples to study structure, specificity, tone, and variation. They are demonstrations—not claims about a real person or organization unless the example itself makes that explicit.
What to notice in the examples
A memorable dedication fits the author’s voice and relationship to the recipient, stays concise, and avoids explaining private context so fully that the line loses the elegant directness of a dedication.
- Name the recipient or group clearly enough for the intended tone.
- Choose whether the line should be simple, warm, playful, solemn, or private.
- Keep explanation minimal unless the dedication deliberately uses a short sentence or two.
- Separate thanks to contributors into acknowledgments.
To my parents, for the books and the quiet to read them.
For everyone who had to begin again.
To Arun—still my first reader.
For the Tuesday-night table, where this story learned how to stand.
In memory of Leela, who never saw the finished pages but shaped all of them.
To the students who asked the question I could not stop thinking about.
For my brother, who insisted the dragon needed better motives.
Keep the underlying decision or pattern, then replace the subject, evidence, relationship, constraints, and tone with details that belong to your situation. If your final line still works after swapping only one noun, it may be too close to the example.
