A useful preface gives readers project context they genuinely benefit from, distinguishes that context from the book’s substantive introduction, and stays concise enough that the main work can begin without unnecessary delay.
- Explain why or how the book came to be when that history matters.
- Clarify edition changes, research circumstances, methodology, or scope if relevant.
- Acknowledge unusual limitations or project decisions that affect interpretation.
- Keep substantive argument or story material for the introduction or main text.
