9 Comma Examples

Use these examples to study structure, specificity, tone, and variation. They are demonstrations—not claims about a real person or organization unless the example itself makes that explicit.

What to notice in the examples

Correct comma use depends on sentence structure rather than pauses alone. A useful approach is to identify clauses and phrase functions first, then apply the rule that matches the relationship.

  • Use a comma after many introductory clauses or phrases.
  • Use commas to separate items in a series.
  • Use a comma before a coordinating conjunction joining two independent clauses.
  • Set off nonrestrictive or parenthetical information.
  • Avoid inserting a comma between a subject and its verb without a structural reason.

Turn an example into your own writing

Keep the underlying decision or pattern, then replace the subject, evidence, relationship, constraints, and tone with details that belong to your situation. If your final line still works after swapping only one noun, it may be too close to the example.
