What to notice in the examples
A corrected sentence names the person or thing performing the modifying action immediately after the modifier, so readers never have to infer an impossible relationship.
- Identify the hidden actor inside the modifying phrase.
- Place that actor as the grammatical subject of the main clause.
- Rewrite the modifier as a full clause when the actor cannot naturally become the subject.
- Check introductory -ing and -ed phrases especially carefully.
