8 En Dash Examples

Use these examples to study structure, specificity, tone, and variation. They are demonstrations—not claims about a real person or organization unless the example itself makes that explicit.

What to notice in the examples

Correct en-dash use is restrained and consistent: use it where the style calls for a span or relationship, avoid mixing it with from/to constructions, and do not substitute it for every hyphen or em dash.

  • Use an en dash for inclusive ranges when appropriate.
  • Use it for selected paired relationships in styles that recommend that convention.
  • Apply spacing consistently according to the publication style.

Turn an example into your own writing

Keep the underlying decision or pattern, then replace the subject, evidence, relationship, constraints, and tone with details that belong to your situation. If your final line still works after swapping only one noun, it may be too close to the example.
