What to notice in the examples

A strong face description gives the reader a few distinctive, observable details that fit the viewpoint, distance, lighting, and scene. It avoids stereotyping personality from facial structure and uses expression as contextual evidence rather than a mind-reading shortcut.

  • Choose two or three features that distinguish this face in this scene.
  • Separate stable features from temporary expression or condition.
  • Use asymmetry, movement, light, scars, lines, grooming, or expression when relevant.
  • Let viewpoint determine what gets noticed first.
  • Avoid beauty-ranking language unless it belongs deliberately to the viewpoint character.
  • Do not infer race, morality, intelligence, or health from facial features alone.

Use these fuller examples to see what changes between a recognizable pattern and a finished piece of writing. The examples are original or explicitly illustrative, so they demonstrate structure without inventing real-world evidence.

Worked example 1Selective introduction

A new supervisor enters a workshop.

A pale scar cut through one eyebrow, and deep lines bracketed his mouth even before he smiled. He set his glasses on the table and asked everyone to keep working.

Why it works: Two features create an image while action keeps the scene moving.

Worked example 2Expression change

A calm character receives bad news.

Nothing in Priya’s face changed at first. Then the muscles beside her jaw tightened and the crease between her brows deepened. She reread the message without speaking.

Why it works: The prose shows change rather than naming emotion.

Prompt → finished structure

See the decisions between the assignment and the final form

These transformations make the hidden planning step visible so the template does not become a fill-in-the-blanks substitute for judgment.

Transformation 1Feature inventory → selective image

Starting material: She had brown eyes, a small nose, pink lips, and brown hair.

Decisions
Keep distinctive details and attach them to action.

Result: A pale freckle cluster crossed her nose; when she laughed, one dimple appeared before the other.

Transformation 2Beauty label → viewpoint-specific detail

Starting material: He was very handsome.

Decisions
Choose what this viewpoint actually notices.

Result: Mara noticed the clean line of his jaw only after he removed the motorcycle helmet and smiled at the guard.

2. Which 1–2 details matter now?
3. What do those details change in image, pace, relationship, or action?
4. What interpretation remains uncertain?
