What to notice in the examples
Effective first-person narration creates a distinctive consciousness rather than merely replacing “he/she” with “I.” The narrator’s knowledge, biases, vocabulary, attention, and blind spots should shape what reaches the reader.
- Establish who is telling the story and from what point in time.
- Limit knowledge to what the narrator could plausibly know.
- Let voice influence description and interpretation.
- Use blind spots and mistaken assumptions deliberately.
- Keep other characters’ inner thoughts inferred through behavior unless later revealed.

Keep the underlying decision or pattern, then replace the subject, evidence, relationship, constraints, and tone with details that belong to your situation. If your final line still works after swapping only one noun, it may be too close to the example.
