What to notice in the examples
A strong in-medias-res opening creates immediate orientation and pressure without confusing the reader. It starts with consequential activity, establishes what the viewpoint character wants now, and delays backstory only when that delay creates useful curiosity.
- An active situation already in progress.
- A viewpoint character with an immediate goal or problem.
- Enough orientation to understand the stakes of the current moment.
- Backstory revealed later through selective context.

Keep the underlying decision or pattern, then replace the subject, evidence, relationship, constraints, and tone with details that belong to your situation. If your final line still works after swapping only one noun, it may be too close to the example.
