8 Instruction Writing Examples

Use these examples to study structure, specificity, tone, and variation. They are demonstrations—not claims about a real person or organization unless the example itself makes that explicit.

What to notice in the examples

Strong instructions let the intended reader complete the task without guessing, use exact names for controls or materials, distinguish required steps from optional advice, and account for common failure conditions.

  • Use a task-based title that matches what users search.
  • State prerequisites or applicability before the steps.
  • Write ordered steps with exact labels and expected results.
  • Add troubleshooting only for common, verified failure modes.

Turn an example into your own writing

Keep the underlying decision or pattern, then replace the subject, evidence, relationship, constraints, and tone with details that belong to your situation. If your final line still works after swapping only one noun, it may be too close to the example.
