8 Novel Outline Examples

Use these examples to study structure, specificity, tone, and variation. They are demonstrations—not claims about a real person or organization unless the example itself makes that explicit.

What to notice in the examples

A useful outline reduces uncertainty without pretending the draft cannot change. It shows how pressure escalates, why scenes occur in their order, and how major choices transform the plot or characters.

  • State the protagonist, central desire, and main opposition.
  • Identify the inciting incident and major turning points.
  • Map escalating complications and meaningful decisions.
  • Track the internal arc alongside external events.
  • Define the climax and what the ending resolves or leaves open.

Turn an example into your own writing

Keep the underlying decision or pattern, then replace the subject, evidence, relationship, constraints, and tone with details that belong to your situation. If your final line still works after swapping only one noun, it may be too close to the example.
