What to notice in the examples

A strong novel synopsis preserves the story’s causal spine, names the protagonist’s major decisions and consequences, reveals the ending, and removes minor scenes, subplots, and descriptive flourishes that do not affect the central arc.

  • Opening paragraph identifies protagonist, situation, central goal, and destabilizing event.
  • Middle paragraphs track major turning points in causal order.
  • Only essential secondary characters and subplots are included.
  • Final section reveals the climax, decisive choice, ending, and changed state.

Keep the underlying decision or pattern, then replace the subject, evidence, relationship, constraints, and tone with details that belong to your situation. If your final line still works after swapping only one noun, it may be too close to the example.
