11 Paraphrasing Examples

Use these examples to study structure, specificity, tone, and variation. They are demonstrations—not claims about a real person or organization unless the example itself makes that explicit.

What to notice in the examples

A good paraphrase is accurate, substantially reworded, integrated into the writer’s own sentence, and cited appropriately; it should not merely replace a few words with synonyms.

  • Understand the complete source idea before rewriting it.
  • Set the source aside and state the idea from memory in your own structure.
  • Compare the new version against the original for accuracy and accidental copying.
  • Add citation or attribution according to the context.
1

Source idea: frequent feedback helps learners adjust before mistakes become habits. Paraphrase: Students can correct ineffective approaches earlier when feedback arrives while they are still practicing.

2

Source idea: urban trees cool streets through shade and evapotranspiration. Paraphrase: Tree canopy can lower local heat both by blocking solar exposure and by releasing water vapor through leaves.

3

Source idea: asynchronous communication gives people more time to formulate responses. Paraphrase: When a reply does not have to be immediate, team members can think through the context before answering.

4

Source idea: retrieval practice strengthens memory by requiring information to be produced. Paraphrase: Recalling an answer without seeing it exercises memory differently from simply reviewing the material again.

5

Source idea: point of view limits the information available to a reader. Paraphrase: The narrator’s position determines which events, thoughts, and interpretations the audience can directly access.

6

Source idea: clear labels reduce navigation uncertainty. Paraphrase: Users move through an interface more confidently when menu names predict what they will find after clicking.

7

Source idea: price transparency affects consumer decisions. Paraphrase: People can compare offers more accurately when the full recurring cost is visible before purchase.

8

Source idea: maintenance determines whether planted trees survive. Paraphrase: Long-term watering and care can matter as much as planting itself when cities evaluate urban forestry results.

9

Source idea: delays came mostly from unclear ownership, not workload. Paraphrase: The report attributes most delays to ambiguous responsibility rather than excessive task volume.

10

Source idea: the effect was small but consistent across samples. Paraphrase: Although the measured effect was modest, it appeared in every sample the researchers examined.

A real paraphrase may change both structure and emphasis while preserving the source claim; replacing several words with synonyms is still too close when the sentence follows the same syntax.

Turn an example into your own writing

Keep the underlying decision or pattern, then replace the subject, evidence, relationship, constraints, and tone with details that belong to your situation. If your final line still works after swapping only one noun, it may be too close to the example.
