8 Present Tense Fiction Examples

Use these examples to study structure, specificity, tone, and variation. They are demonstrations—not claims about a real person or organization unless the example itself makes that explicit.

What to notice in the examples

Effective present-tense fiction maintains clear temporal control, varies sentence rhythm, handles backstory without accidental tense drift, and uses immediacy as a narrative choice rather than a constant attempt to make every sentence urgent.

  • Present-tense scene action.
  • Past or perfect forms used clearly for events that happened before the current scene.
  • Consistent handling of interior thought, summary, and scene transitions.
  • Deliberate shifts only when a framing device or timeline requires them.
1

“Mara opens the archive box and finds a key taped beneath the lid.” keeps scene action in the present.

2

“She has seen the symbol before, on a door her father sealed years ago.” uses present perfect plus past detail to reach backward.

3

“By noon, the storm has cut the road.” shows a completed change within the current narrative frame.

4

“When she was twelve, the river flooded the lower street every spring.” clearly shifts into an earlier habitual period.

5

“I cross the station every day, but today the east gate is chained.” combines routine present with immediate present.

6

“The elevator stops. Nobody speaks.” lets short present-tense sentences sharpen a beat without extra urgency words.

7

“He says he mailed it Monday; I know the post office was closed.” keeps dialogue framing and immediate inference consistent.

8

“Tomorrow, we leave before sunrise.” shows that present-tense narration can refer clearly to future plans.

Turn an example into your own writing

Keep the underlying decision or pattern, then replace the subject, evidence, relationship, constraints, and tone with details that belong to your situation. If your final line still works after swapping only one noun, it may be too close to the example.
