Effective present-tense fiction maintains clear temporal control, varies sentence rhythm, handles backstory without accidental tense drift, and uses immediacy as a narrative choice rather than a constant attempt to make every sentence urgent.
- Present-tense scene action.
- Past or perfect forms used clearly for events that happened before the current scene.
- Consistent handling of interior thought, summary, and scene transitions.
- Deliberate shifts only when a framing device or timeline requires them.

Keep the underlying decision or pattern, then replace the subject, evidence, relationship, constraints, and tone with details that belong to your situation. If your final line still works after swapping only one noun, it may be too close to the example.
