8 Proofreading Checklist Examples
Use these examples to study structure, specificity, tone, and variation. They are demonstrations—not claims about a real person or organization unless the example itself makes that explicit.
What to notice in the examples
Strong proofreading uses several focused passes, checks high-risk factual strings separately, and avoids rewriting large sections during the final review because major edits create new errors.
- Proofread only after structure and content are settled.
- Use separate passes for language, facts, and formatting.
- Verify names, numbers, links, and repeated style choices independently.
Number pass: 1,500 is checked against the source table.
Name pass: a contributor's surname is verified against the byline record.
Link pass: every cited URL is opened and matched to its claim.
Heading pass: parallel capitalization is restored across H2s.
List pass: punctuation is standardized across complete-sentence bullets.
Duplicate-word pass: 'the the' is removed.
Final visual pass: a broken line wrap in a callout is caught before publication.
Keep the underlying decision or pattern, then replace the subject, evidence, relationship, constraints, and tone with details that belong to your situation. If your final line still works after swapping only one noun, it may be too close to the example.
