Convenience sampling from one campus limits generalization to students at institutions with different enrollment profiles.
8 Research Limitations Examples
Use these examples to study structure, specificity, tone, and variation. They are demonstrations—not claims about a real person or organization unless the example itself makes that explicit.
What to notice in the examples
A credible limitations section names consequential constraints, explains the likely direction or scope of their effect, distinguishes limitations from mistakes, and avoids using limitations as either an apology or a reason to dismiss the entire study.
- Limitation stated specifically rather than generically.
- Explanation of what inference, population, measurement, or interpretation it affects.
- Any mitigation already used in the design or analysis.
- Reasonable implication for future research without claiming future work will solve everything.
Self-reported screen time may contain recall error, so associations should not be interpreted as precise exposure estimates.
The cross-sectional design establishes association at one time point but cannot determine whether the predictor preceded the outcome.
Only English-language documents were included, potentially underrepresenting perspectives published in other languages.
Two coders analyzed the interviews and resolved disagreements, but interpretation remains shaped by the coding framework they developed.
The intervention lasted four weeks, so the study cannot establish whether observed behavior changes persist over a semester.
Missing income data were more common in one subgroup, which could bias comparisons even after sensitivity analysis.
Testing occurred on desktop computers, limiting direct application to mobile interaction patterns.
Keep the underlying decision or pattern, then replace the subject, evidence, relationship, constraints, and tone with details that belong to your situation. If your final line still works after swapping only one noun, it may be too close to the example.
