8 Romance Writing Prompts Examples

Use these examples to study structure, specificity, tone, and variation. They are demonstrations—not claims about a real person or organization unless the example itself makes that explicit.

What to notice in the examples

A strong romance prompt creates reasons for the characters to interact, meaningful obstacles beyond simple misunderstanding, and room for attraction to grow through choices, compatibility, conflict, and vulnerability rather than instant declarations.

  • Use a concrete situation rather than an abstract theme alone.
  • Include at least one constraint, tension, unanswered question, or consequential choice.
  • Leave enough open space for different genres, voices, endings, and interpretations.
  • Treat the prompt as ignition, not a checklist that every draft must preserve.
1

Two rivals must jointly host an event neither can afford to cancel.

2

A former couple receives the same invitation with one hotel reservation attached.

3

A translator realizes the client they dislike has been quietly correcting errors that protect them.

4

Two neighbors keep receiving each other’s deliveries and finally discover the mix-up is intentional.

5

A chef and a food critic are assigned to the same disaster-relief kitchen.

6

A musician hires the only sound engineer who once walked out of their first band.

7

A librarian and an architect disagree over a renovation while both trying to preserve the same hidden feature.

8

Two friends fake a business partnership for a grant interview and learn the partnership may be less fake than expected.

Turn an example into your own writing

Keep the underlying decision or pattern, then replace the subject, evidence, relationship, constraints, and tone with details that belong to your situation. If your final line still works after swapping only one noun, it may be too close to the example.
