What to notice in the examples

A strong running passage matches sentence rhythm and detail density to the scene. It distinguishes sprinting, jogging, pursuit, escape, endurance, play, competition, and impaired movement through concrete consequences while avoiding unsupported medical claims or exaggerated biomechanics.

  • Clarify why the character is running and what could change if they stop.
  • Choose pace, terrain, breathing, and one or two body sensations appropriate to the viewpoint.
  • Let environment affect movement: slope, mud, stairs, crowd, heat, darkness, obstacles.
  • Use sentence length deliberately for pace rather than making every action sentence short.
  • Track fatigue or recovery across time instead of resetting it each paragraph.
  • Keep mechanics plausible enough that the reader can picture where bodies are.

Use these fuller examples to see what changes between a recognizable pattern and a finished piece of writing. The examples are original or explicitly illustrative, so they demonstrate structure without inventing real-world evidence.

Worked example 1Pursuit geography

A character runs through a station.

She cleared the ticket gate, cut left around the closed kiosk, and nearly lost her footing where rain had blown across the tiles. The footsteps behind her grew louder on the stairs.

Why it works: Route, surface, and relative sound keep the chase spatially legible.

Worked example 2Endurance pacing

A runner climbs a long hill.

Halfway up, his stride shortened. Conversation disappeared first, then the easy rhythm of his breathing. He fixed his eyes on the next lamp post instead of the top.

Why it works: Fatigue develops through changing behavior rather than repeated “tired” labels.

Prompt → finished structure

See the decisions between the assignment and the final form

These transformations make the hidden planning step visible so the template does not become a fill-in-the-blanks substitute for judgment.

Transformation 1Adverb → physical motion

Starting material: He ran very quickly down the hill.

Decisions
Use terrain, stride, balance, or sound.

Result: He lengthened his stride downhill until loose stones forced his arms out for balance.

Transformation 2Repeated fatigue → progression

Starting material: She was tired. She was exhausted.

Decisions
Show what changes as effort accumulates.

Result: Her breathing lost its rhythm, then her stride shortened, and finally she stopped trying to pass the runner ahead.

Clear motionState pace, direction, and one relevant physical/environment cue.Reader can follow the movement.
Scene pressureUse terrain, breath, obstacles, and syntax to change pace.Running has consequences rather than generic speed.
Sustained sequenceTrack geography, fatigue, choices, and relative position over time. The action remains spatially and physically coherent.

Keep the underlying decision or pattern, then replace the subject, evidence, relationship, constraints, and tone with details that belong to your situation. If your final line still works after swapping only one noun, it may be too close to the example.
