What to notice in the examples

A semicolon signals a stronger connection than a period while still separating complete grammatical units. It should clarify structure, not decorate a sentence.

  • Both sides of a joining semicolon should normally be independent clauses.
  • Use a semicolon before a conjunctive adverb such as however when joining two independent clauses.
  • Use semicolons in a complex list when commas already appear inside items.
  • Do not use a semicolon where a colon, comma, or dash expresses the relationship better.
