What to notice in the examples
Effective variety supports meaning. Writers vary structure when the change clarifies relationships, prevents repetitive rhythm, or gives an important idea more or less emphasis—not simply to make every sentence look different.
- Mix short and longer sentences according to emphasis.
- Vary openings among subjects, introductory phrases, dependent clauses, and occasional transitions.
- Use simple, compound, complex, and compound-complex structures for different relationships.
- Repeat a structure intentionally when parallelism is more useful than variety.
After three unsuccessful tests, the team changed the sensor. The fourth test worked.
Mara opened the envelope, read the first line, and stopped. Nothing in the archive had prepared her for the signature.
