Effective contrast transitions express the exact relationship and fit the sentence structure: some connect independent clauses, some introduce dependent clauses, and some work best as sentence-level transitional phrases.
- Use however or nevertheless for sentence-level contrast with appropriate punctuation.
- Use although or while to subordinate a concession or contrast.
- Use whereas to compare contrasting characteristics directly.
- Use by contrast when the writer wants to foreground a comparison between two cases.
