600 Transition Words & Phrases by Relationship

This is one of the site’s deepest example collections: 600 original examples organized across 11 practical categories. Search, filter, and compare patterns without reading the list in order.

What to notice in the examples

The best transition is the one that accurately names the logic between sentences or sections. Adding more transitions does not automatically improve flow; a wrong connector can make clear ideas less coherent.

  • Choose transitions by relationship, not by how formal they sound.
  • Use “however” for contrast, not simply to start a new thought.
  • Use causal transitions only when a causal relationship is justified.
  • Vary between explicit transitions and structural continuity so prose does not feel mechanical.
Worked format lab

See complete reasoning, not just isolated lines

Use these fuller examples to see what changes between a recognizable pattern and a finished piece of writing. The examples are original or explicitly illustrative, so they demonstrate structure without inventing real-world evidence.

Worked example 1Wrong causal connector

Revision

Weak: The sample was small. Therefore, the result may not generalize.\nBetter: The sample was small; therefore, the estimate is uncertain and may not generalize.

Why it works: The revision makes the causal relationship explicit instead of asking “therefore” to bridge an unstated reasoning step.

Worked example 2Contrast versus concession

Revision

Draft: However, the intervention was inexpensive, it still required staff training.\nBetter: Although the intervention was inexpensive, it still required staff training.

Why it works: “Although” subordinates one true point while conceding it; “however” would require a different sentence structure.

Worked example 3Transition removed

Paragraph flow

Mechanical: First, the team reviewed the logs. Secondly, the team interviewed staff. Thirdly, the team compared the findings.\nTighter: The team reviewed the logs, interviewed staff, and then compared the two evidence sources.

Why it works: A transition is useful only when it helps the reader understand the relationship; not every step needs a separate signpost.

Prompt → finished structure

See the decisions between the assignment and the final form

These transformations make the hidden planning step visible so the template does not become a fill-in-the-blanks substitute for judgment.

Transformation 1Wrong connector → correct logic

Starting material: Draft uses “therefore” simply because the second sentence follows the first.

Decisions
Name the actual relationship and choose a connector only after the logic is clear.

Result: A causal, contrasting, additive, or qualifying transition that says what the reasoning actually does.

Transformation 2Transition-heavy paragraph → structural flow

Starting material: Draft begins every sentence with “Furthermore,” “Moreover,” or “Additionally.”

Decisions
Group related ideas, use reference words and parallel structure, and keep explicit connectors only at genuine logical turns.

Result: A paragraph that flows because its ideas connect, not because every sentence announces a transition.

Depth by level

Increase the reasoning, not just the word count

LevelWhat changesQuality test
RelationshipName the logical relationship first: addition, contrast, cause, example, sequence, concession, qualification, conclusion, or another real connection. The connector accurately describes the relationship between the ideas.
Paragraph flowUse transitions at the sentence, paragraph, and section level only where the reader needs the relationship signaled.Flow comes from reasoning and reference as well as connector words; the prose does not sound mechanically signposted.
Advanced revisionTest scope, punctuation, register, and whether an explicit connector overstates causation, certainty, or contrast.Removing or changing the transition improves logical precision rather than merely varying vocabulary.
Reusable frameworks

Start from the decisions the format requires

Framework 1
Observation → function
1. What can the viewpoint actually perceive?
2. Which 1–2 details matter now?
3. What do those details change in image, pace, relationship, or action?
4. What interpretation remains uncertain?
