What to notice in the examples

A strong weight description is respectful, specific to the writing purpose, and proportionate to the scene. It distinguishes body size from body shape, strength, health, and character traits; avoids demeaning comparisons; and uses exact measurements only when the genre or task genuinely calls for them.

  • Ask why body size needs to be described in this scene or document.
  • Prefer neutral observable language over judgmental labels.
  • Do not infer health, diet, fitness, laziness, wealth, morality, or personality from size.
  • Use clothing fit, silhouette, scale, movement, or measurements only when relevant.
  • Remember that viewpoint language can reveal bias; narrative endorsement is a separate choice.
  • Avoid animalizing, objectifying, or comic comparisons unless the text is deliberately examining that harmful viewpoint.

Use these fuller examples to see what changes between a recognizable pattern and a finished piece of writing. The examples are original or explicitly illustrative, so they demonstrate structure without inventing real-world evidence.

Worked example 1Neutral character image

A viewpoint notices how two people fit into a cramped booth.

Jon was broad through the torso, and when he sat beside the smaller man their shoulders nearly touched. He shifted his bag to the floor to make more room.

Why it works: Body size is described through observable spatial consequence without value judgment.

Worked example 2Biased viewpoint revised

Draft calls a character “lazy-looking” because of body size.

Neutral narrative: Her body was full through the waist and hips. Biased viewpoint, if relevant: Daniel had been taught to mistake size for effort, and caught himself doing it again.

Why it works: The revision separates body description from an unsupported moral inference.

Prompt → finished structure

See the decisions between the assignment and the final form

These transformations make the hidden planning step visible so the template does not become a fill-in-the-blanks substitute for judgment.

Transformation 1Moral label → neutral body description

Starting material: The lazy, overweight man blocked the doorway.

Decisions
Separate body size, action, and unsupported judgment.

Result: A broad, heavyset man stood in the doorway, leaving only a narrow space to pass.

Transformation 2Health inference → relevant observation

Starting material: She looked unhealthy because she was very thin.

Decisions
Do not diagnose health from size; state only relevant observable facts.

Result: Her frame was slight, and the borrowed coat hung loose at the shoulders and sleeves.
