4 Magic System Templates

Start with structure, then replace every placeholder with information that is true, relevant, and natural for your context. These templates are intentionally skeletal so your final writing does not sound mass-produced.

How to personalize a template

A compelling magic system creates story choices rather than easy solutions, has limits readers can understand at the level the story requires, affects culture and power, and stays consistent unless the plot deliberately reveals a deeper rule.

  1. 1
Choose the template closest to your actual purpose.
  2. 2
Replace every bracketed field with specific information.
  3. 3
Delete any sentence that does not belong in your situation.
  4. 4
Read the result aloud for unnatural transitions or repeated phrasing.
  5. 5
Verify names, dates, links, facts, and promises before sending or publishing.
Magic System Template 1
System sheet: source [where power comes from] | access [who can use it] | capability [what it does] | limit [what it cannot do] | cost [price] | social effect [institution].
Magic System Template 2
Loophole test: If magic can [ability], why does it not automatically solve [travel/wealth/medicine/war/crime]? Answer: [constraint].
Magic System Template 3
Scene rule: Character wants [goal], tries magic [method], pays [cost], and creates [new complication].
Magic System Template 4
Reveal ladder: early visible rule → exception → deeper mechanism → final consequence that recontextualizes the first rule.
