20 Subplot Templates

Start with structure, then replace every placeholder with information that is true, relevant, and natural for your context. These templates are intentionally skeletal so your final writing does not sound mass-produced.

How to personalize a template

A useful subplot earns page time by altering the main story or deepening a central character, has movement rather than isolated scenes, and resolves at a point that supports rather than competes with the primary climax.

  1. 1
Choose the template closest to your actual purpose.
  2. 2
Replace every bracketed field with specific information.
  3. 3
Delete any sentence that does not belong in your situation.
  4. 4
Read the result aloud for unnatural transitions or repeated phrasing.
  5. 5
Verify names, dates, links, facts, and promises before sending or publishing.
Subplot Template 1
Subplot core: [character] wants [secondary goal], faces [conflict], and this matters to the main plot because [connection].
Subplot Template 2
Intersection map: subplot beat [event] changes main plot by [information/resource/relationship/stake].

Progression: setup → complication → midpoint shift → consequence → resolution.
Subplot Template 4
Removal test: If deleting the subplot changes only page count, merge or cut it; if it changes [character/theme/causality], keep and sharpen that function.
