8 Reference Letter Examples

Use these examples to study structure, specificity, tone, and variation. They are demonstrations—not claims about a real person or organization unless the example itself makes that explicit.

What to notice in the examples

A strong reference letter explains the writer's relationship to the candidate, gives evidence for the qualities claimed, matches those examples to the opportunity, and avoids praise the writer cannot personally support.

  • State who you are and how you know the person.
  • Give two or three evidence-based strengths relevant to the opportunity.
  • Close with a clear level of recommendation and contact availability.

Turn an example into your own writing

Keep the underlying decision or pattern, then replace the subject, evidence, relationship, constraints, and tone with details that belong to your situation. If your final line still works after swapping only one noun, it may be too close to the example.
