Survey study: stratified sample, validated questionnaire, prespecified scoring rules, and regression analysis.
8 Research Methodology Examples
Use these examples to study structure, specificity, tone, and variation. They are demonstrations—not claims about a real person or organization unless the example itself makes that explicit.
What to notice in the examples
A strong methodology is specific enough for readers to understand and evaluate what was done, explains why major choices fit the question, distinguishes design from procedure, and reports decisions transparently rather than hiding inconvenient details.
- Research design and rationale.
- Population, sample, data sources, and selection process.
- Measures, materials, instruments, or coding framework.
- Procedure, analysis plan, ethics, quality checks, and relevant limitations.
Interview study: purposive sampling, semi-structured guide, recorded consent, transcription, iterative coding, and theme development.
Content analysis: defined document corpus, coding unit, codebook, double-coding subset, disagreement resolution, and frequency/relationship analysis.
Experiment: random assignment, control condition, standardized exposure, outcome measurement, and blinded scoring where feasible.
Case study: bounded case, multiple evidence sources, chronological database, and cross-source triangulation.
Usability test: task scenarios, think-aloud protocol, completion/error measures, post-task ratings, and thematic observation notes.
Secondary-data analysis: dataset provenance, inclusion years, variable transformations, weighting rules, and sensitivity checks.
Mixed methods: quantitative survey identifies patterns, follow-up interviews explain why those patterns may occur, and integration happens in the interpretation stage.
Keep the underlying decision or pattern, then replace the subject, evidence, relationship, constraints, and tone with details that belong to your situation. If your final line still works after swapping only one noun, it may be too close to the example.
