350 Satire Examples by Type & Target

This is one of the site’s deepest example collections: 350 original examples organized across 5 practical categories. Search, filter, and compare patterns without reading the list in order.

What to notice in the examples

Strong satire analysis identifies the actual target, the satirical technique, the norm or expectation being distorted, and the criticism produced by that distortion without assuming the narrator and author share the same views.

  • Identify what behavior, institution, belief, or convention is being targeted.
  • Name the mechanism such as irony, parody, exaggeration, inversion, or absurdity.
  • Compare the distorted version with the expected real-world norm.
  • Explain the criticism or question created by the gap.
Worked format lab

See complete reasoning, not just isolated lines

Use these fuller examples to see what changes between a recognizable pattern and a finished piece of writing. The examples are original or explicitly illustrative, so they demonstrate structure without inventing real-world evidence.

Worked example 1Horatian satire

Illustrative office scene

A fictional company introduces a twelve-step approval form whose final question asks whether the form itself was necessary.

Why it works: The gentle absurdity mocks procedural excess without requiring a cruel target.

Worked example 2Juvenalian satire

Illustrative civic scene

A city launches a “Transparency Week” by publishing every transparency policy except the budget for Transparency Week.

Why it works: The darker contradiction attacks institutional hypocrisy rather than simply making a joke about bureaucracy.

Prompt → finished structure

See the decisions between the assignment and the final form

These transformations make the hidden planning step visible so the template does not become a fill-in-the-blanks substitute for judgment.

Transformation 1Complaint → satire

Starting material: Draft simply says a system is inefficient.

Decisions
Create an exaggerated rule or inversion that dramatizes the contradiction and lets the reader infer the critique.

Result: A satirical premise with a target and mechanism.

Transformation 2Random absurdity → focused satire

Starting material: Scene is strange but attacks nothing in particular.

Decisions
Tie the absurdity to a recognizable habit, incentive, contradiction, or power structure.

Result: Humor that carries an argument.

Depth by level

Increase the reasoning, not just the word count

LevelWhat changesQuality test
RecognitionIdentify the exact structural or meaning relationship in context rather than naming the device from one keyword. The explanation points to wording, placement, expectation, recurrence, or contrast that makes the label testable.
Purposeful useChoose the device only when it changes emphasis, rhythm, interpretation, audience response, or structure. The device performs a job that plain wording would not perform as effectively.
AnalysisExplain mechanism, local effect, larger significance, and plausible alternatives or limits. The analysis goes beyond “this creates emphasis” and shows how the effect is produced.
Reusable frameworks

Start from the decisions the format requires

Framework 1
Observation → function
1. What can the viewpoint actually perceive?
2. Which 1–2 details matter now?
3. What do those details change in image, pace, relationship, or action?
4. What interpretation remains uncertain?
Framework 2
Generic → specific revision
Generic line: [x]
Observable evidence: [x]
Context/constraint: [x]
Unnecessary inference removed: [x]
Revised line: [x]

Turn an example into your own writing

Keep the underlying decision or pattern, then replace the subject, evidence, relationship, constraints, and tone with details that belong to your situation. If your final line still works after swapping only one noun, it may be too close to the example.
