8 Story Beats Examples

Use these examples to study structure, specificity, tone, and variation. They are demonstrations—not claims about a real person or organization unless the example itself makes that explicit.

What to notice in the examples

Strong beats are specific enough to change what a character knows, wants, feels, risks, or decides; a sequence of beats creates momentum when each one meaningfully affects the next.

  • Action beat: something happens or a character acts.
  • Reaction beat: a character interprets or responds to that change.
  • Decision beat: the response produces a choice or new objective.
  • Consequence beat: the choice alters options, stakes, or information.
1

The manager offers Mara a promotion; she notices the transfer clause; she asks about relocation; his evasive answer changes the scene from celebration to suspicion.

2

A locked door becomes a beat only when the character realizes the key should have worked.

3

In an argument, silence can be a beat when it changes who holds control of the conversation.

4

A character sees smoke, dismisses it, then smells burning plastic; the second cue changes the interpretation and next action.

5

A romantic beat occurs when a practical touch is interpreted differently than intended.

6

A mystery beat turns when a witness repeats a phrase only the culprit should know.

7

A comic beat escalates when the attempted cover story creates a more embarrassing assumption.

8

An emotional beat can be the moment a character chooses not to send a message they already wrote.

Turn an example into your own writing

Keep the underlying decision or pattern, then replace the subject, evidence, relationship, constraints, and tone with details that belong to your situation. If your final line still works after swapping only one noun, it may be too close to the example.
