8 Story Stakes Examples

Use these examples to study structure, specificity, tone, and variation. They are demonstrations—not claims about a real person or organization unless the example itself makes that explicit.

What to notice in the examples

Strong stakes are specific to the character, credible within the story, visible before the climax, and capable of changing as new information or commitments make success and failure more complicated.

  • Concrete external consequence such as loss, danger, deadline, status, access, or resource.
  • Personal reason the consequence matters to this character.
  • Relational, moral, or identity cost that prevents the stakes from being purely abstract.
  • Escalation that changes magnitude, probability, or meaning as the story progresses.

Turn an example into your own writing

Keep the underlying decision or pattern, then replace the subject, evidence, relationship, constraints, and tone with details that belong to your situation. If your final line still works after swapping only one noun, it may be too close to the example.
