Story Stakes Template 1
Stakes frame: If [character] fails/does nothing, [specific consequence] happens, which matters because [personal connection].
Start with structure, then replace every placeholder with information that is true, relevant, and natural for your context. These templates are intentionally skeletal so your final writing does not sound mass-produced.
Strong stakes are specific to the character, credible within the story, visible before the climax, and capable of changing as new information or commitments make success and failure more complicated.
Stakes frame: If [character] fails/does nothing, [specific consequence] happens, which matters because [personal connection].
Escalation ladder: initial cost [x] → narrowed option [y] → relational/moral cost [z] → final choice [tradeoff].
Success cost: Even if [goal] succeeds, [character] may lose [value/relationship/identity], forcing [choice].
Behavior test: Given these stakes, would the character rationally [action]? If not, change the stakes, information, or behavior.
