Reusable frameworks

19 Graph Description Templates

Start with structure, then replace every placeholder with information that is true, relevant, and natural for your context. These templates are intentionally skeletal so your final writing does not sound mass-produced.

How to personalize a template

A strong graph description gives readers the overall pattern first, then uses a few well-chosen values, comparisons, peaks, changes, or anomalies to support that summary without narrating every point on the chart or inventing causes the graph cannot establish.

  1. 1
Choose the template closest to your actual purpose.
  2. 2
Replace every bracketed field with specific information.
  3. 3
Delete any sentence that does not belong in your situation.
  4. 4
Read the result aloud for unnatural transitions or repeated phrasing.
  5. 5
Verify names, dates, links, facts, and promises before sending or publishing.
Graph Description Template 1
Graph-description paragraph
Purpose: The [graph type] shows [variable] across [time/categories] in [unit].
Overview: Overall, [main trend/comparison].
Evidence: [value/comparison 1]. [value/comparison 2].
Exception: [anomaly/limit if relevant].
Interpretation boundary: The graph [shows/does not establish] [careful conclusion].
Graph Description Template 2
Line graph
Opening: The line graph tracks [measure] from [start] to [end].
Overall trend: [rise/fall/stability/fluctuation].
Key change: [from x to y during period].
Turning point: [peak/trough/crossing].
Closing: [end-state comparison without inventing cause].
Graph Description Template 3
Bar graph
Opening: The bar chart compares [categories] on [measure/unit].
Leader: [category] is highest at [value].
Contrast: [category] is [difference] above/below [category].
Pattern: [cluster/rank/gap].
Caution: [scale/sample/other limitation if relevant].
Graph Description Template 4
Pie chart
Opening: The chart shows how [whole] is divided among [categories].
Largest share: [category + %].
Next shares: [important comparison].
Combined share: [categories + total] when useful.
Takeaway: [dominant composition pattern].
Graph Description Template 5
Scatter plot
Variables: [x variable] and [y variable].
Pattern: [positive/negative/no clear association].
Strength: [weak/moderate/strong, only if visually justified].
Outliers/clusters: [x].
Boundary: Association does not by itself establish causation.
Graph Description Template 6
Data commentary
Observation: [what the graph directly shows].
Evidence: [specific value/comparison].
Interpretation: [careful meaning].
Alternative/limit: [what else could explain it or what the graph cannot show].
