Choose a poem for the setting and the speaker. A short card may need only a few lines, while a funeral reading needs enough shape to carry a room without becoming difficult to follow aloud.
Concrete images are often more affecting than abstract claims. A chair, road, recipe, garden, window, tool, familiar phrase, or repeated routine can hold memory without pretending to summarize an entire life.
Read any funeral poem aloud before choosing it. Listen for breath, pauses, difficult phrases, and places where emotion may interrupt. Spoken clarity matters more than elaborate rhyme.
Attribution matters. Do not attach a famous author’s name to altered, anonymous, or newly written wording. If you adapt an original poem for private use, keep the adaptation honest.
Is it true? Is it appropriate to the relationship? Is it private enough for the channel? Does it reduce rather than add pressure? Can you replace one generic phrase with one real detail?
